A Vision for Halifax: Empowering Our Small Businesses

Updated: Aug 25

As a proud resident of the Halifax Regional Municipality, I've witnessed the incredible spirit and resilience of our local businesses. These enterprises are the backbone of our community, the heartbeats that make our neighbourhoods vibrant and unique. As your mayoral candidate, I am committed to creating an environment where our businesses not only survive but thrive.

Reducing Operating Costs for a Thriving Business Community

Our small business owners work tirelessly to keep their doors open, often facing high operating costs. As mayor, I will advocate for tax breaks and subsidies that will lighten this burden. I'll work to promote affordable commercial real estate developments and incentivize property owners to offer lower rents, ensuring that more businesses can flourish in prime locations without breaking the bank.

Improving Access to Financing

Access to financing should not be a roadblock for our entrepreneurs. By partnering with local financial institutions, I'll create small business loan programs with favourable terms. Together, we'll open doors to grants and funding opportunities through municipal programs and partnerships with provincial and federal governments. No dream should be deferred because of financial constraints.

Fostering a Competitive Edge

Competition is healthy, but it shouldn't stifle the growth of our local businesses. I'll support the growth of business incubators and accelerators, providing the resources and mentorship needed for startups to succeed. Through targeted marketing campaigns and "shop local" initiatives, I'll shine a spotlight on our incredible local businesses, encouraging everyone in Halifax to support their neighbours.

Addressing Workforce Issues

A business is only as strong as its team. By collaborating with educational institutions, we'll create training programs tailored to the needs of our local businesses. I will support initiatives that attract and retain skilled workers, such as affordable housing projects and quality of life improvements, making Halifax an attractive place to live and work for everyone.

Mitigating Seasonal Variability

Our city's charm shouldn't be limited to a single season. By organizing and promoting events and festivals during off-peak times, we'll draw visitors year-round, boosting business activity. I'll also support our businesses in diversifying their offerings, reducing dependency on seasonal income and ensuring stability throughout the year.

Simplifying Regulatory Compliance

Navigating regulations should be straightforward, not a maze. Entrepreneurs should be able to easily look to the municipality to understand what's being asked of them, making it easier and faster for businesses to comply. Clear guidance and resources will be provided, so our entrepreneurs can focus on what they do best—running their businesses.

Enhancing Marketing and Visibility

Every small business deserves a spotlight. I will create a municipal marketing fund to assist with advertising and promotion. By developing a strong online presence for local businesses through municipal websites and social media channels, I’ll ensure that every business gets the visibility it deserves.

Stabilizing Economic Factors

Economic stability is crucial for our community’s prosperity. I’ll implement policies that promote growth, such as infrastructure improvements and investment in key industries. By advocating for economic development initiatives at the provincial and federal levels, I’ll create a robust foundation for all businesses to build upon.

Strengthening Supply Chains

A resilient business community depends on strong supply chains. I’ll facilitate local networking events and trade shows, connecting small businesses with local suppliers. By supporting the development of local supply chains, I’ll reduce dependency on external sources and foster a more self-sufficient economy.

Encouraging Technological Adoption

In this digital age, technology is a powerful tool for growth. I’ll provide grants or low-interest loans for small businesses to invest in the latest technologies. Workshops and training programs on digital marketing, e-commerce, and other relevant technologies will be offered, ensuring our businesses stay ahead of the curve.

Together, we can build a Halifax where small businesses are celebrated, supported, and successful. As your mayor, I will be your advocate, your partner, and your champion. Let's create a future where every small business in Halifax has the opportunity to shine.
