Creating a Safer, Stronger Halifax: Our Comprehensive Plan to Tackle Crime and Substances

Updated: Aug 25

As your mayoral candidate, I am committed to ensuring that Halifax becomes a safer, stronger, and more vibrant city for all residents. Addressing crime and substance issues is a top priority, and I have a plan to achieve this goal. Here’s how we will enhance safety and security in our community, and why it will benefit every one of us.

Enhancing Law Enforcement

Increased Police Presence and Community Policing: We will boost the number of police officers on our streets and implement community policing strategies to build strong relationships between officers and residents. A visible, trusted police presence will deter criminal activity and foster a sense of security in our neighbourhoods.

Specialized Units: Establishing specialized units focused on drug enforcement, gang activity, and violent crimes will allow for more targeting and dismantling of criminal networks. This targeted approach will lead to more efficient and successful crime reduction efforts, making our city safer for everyone.

Investing in Technology and Training

Advanced Technology and Training Programs: Utilizing advanced technology and providing ongoing training for our officers including trauma-informed approaches, de-escalation and cultural competency will enhance our crime-fighting capabilities. Equipped with the latest tools and skills, our law enforcement officers will be better prepared to keep our city safe.

Addressing the Root Causes of Crime

Economic Development and Education Initiatives: Investing in job creation, educational programs, and affordable housing will provide opportunities and stability for our residents, reducing the factors that contribute to criminal behaviour. With more job opportunities, better education, and stable housing, our community members will have the support they need to thrive and stay away from crime.

Enhancing Social Services and Support

Substance Abuse Treatment and Support for Individuals in Need of Housing: Increasing access to treatment programs and mental health services, along with expanding support for individuals living on or near the streets, will help those struggling to get back on their feet. By providing the necessary support and resources, we can help individuals overcome their challenges and lead productive, healthy lives.

Community Centres: Establishing community centres that offer safe spaces, resources, and recreational activities will engage and support our residents. These centres will foster a sense of community, provide valuable services, and keep residents, especially youth, engaged in positive activities.

Engaging and Empowering the Community

Neighbourhood Watch Programs and Public Awareness Campaigns: Encouraging residents to participate in neighbourhood watch programs and launching campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of community involvement will make a significant impact. Empowered residents will take an active role in keeping their neighbourhoods safe, leading to a stronger, more vigilant, and connected community.

Monitoring and Evaluating Progress

Data Collection and Continuous Improvement: Collecting and analyzing data on crime rates, arrests, incarceration and community feedback will help us assess the effectiveness of our initiatives and make necessary adjustments. By continuously improving our strategies based on real data, we ensure that our efforts remain effective and responsive to the community's needs.

Inspiring a Safer, Stronger Halifax

Together, we can build a Halifax where residents feel safe, valued, and supported. By enhancing law enforcement, investing in our youth and communities, and addressing the root causes of crime, we are creating a city where families can thrive, businesses can grow and thrive.

Your voice and your participation are crucial to our success. Join me in this journey to make Halifax a beacon of safety and strength. Together, we can create a brighter, more secure future for all.
